I'm not sure that I've seen many proponents of consent-based ethics also advocate for anti-natalism. The words malignantly and useless are capitalized because this is the most obvious reality, an absolute truth. The difference between the optimist and the pessimist. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. We should all stop procreating, because life is essentially characterized by suffering. Just read the following passage, meant to explain the mindset and reaction of normal people, or "insiders," who reject what Ligotti is trying to say in this book: This is just the middle portion of a rant that continues for at least a couple of pages in a long wall of text (the paragraph breaks were added by me). Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. To read his fiction, or nonfiction, is to visit a different world, an uncanny place that makes one feel uncomfortable; yet it is a place where one can return and enjoy the eeriness. But we know too much to content ourselves with surviving, reproducing, dying—and nothing else. Suzanne's references to "the vastness" likewise seem to conflict, as she is described as having experienced ego death but at the same time appears to have developed a religious tendency. If you're anything like me, Ligotti's tone in this peculiar nihilistic screed will creep into daily life. Once the banal masks of idealized religiosity and morality are taken off, the real germ of life reveals itself. Through impressively wide-ranging discussions of and reflections on literary and philosophical works of a pessimistic bent, he shows that the greatest horrors are not the products of our imagination.
Please try again. The curse of consciousness is something I drew from this work: our self awareness illuminates the frustrations and other complications of existence. In Thomas Ligotti's first nonfiction outing, an examination of the meaning (or meaninglessness) of life through an insightful, unsparing argument that proves the greatest horrors are not the products of our … I likewise appreciate that he acknowledges that this is not an irrefutable argument that he is making. In this challenging philosophical work, celebrated supernatural writer Thomas Ligotti broaches these and other issues in an unflinching and penetrating manner that brings to mind some of his own imperishable horror fiction. Everything tears away at everything else...forever. His fiction is known to be some of the most terrifying in the genre of supernatural horror, but Thomas Ligotti's first nonfiction book may be even scarier. Hippocampus Press; 35328th Edition (April 30, 2011). According to Metzinger, we are not really people as we think we are but the product of a self-modeling mechanism that simulates people. Thomas Ligotti’s “The Conspiracy Against The Human Race” eloquently and poetically describes the feeling already familiar to every outsider of life, to every pessimist, to those who know and have felt deep down that life is as Ligotti describes “malignantly useless.” The titular ‘Conspiracy’ refers less to a cabal of individuals and here to the necessity of conscious beings to develop methods of limiting the extent … In any case, just understand that writer of this review is one who is in a state of existence without Being who walks alone, without purpose, through a broken world. Kelsey Piper, who writes at The Unit of Caring, has this to say on the matter of animal suffering: It is these last few lines that I think that are the most important. Ligotti illuminates the driving forces of cosmic and existential horror and creates a sound and endearing defense for pessimism. MALIGNANTLY USELESS. Arthur Schopenhauer, a German philosopher whose work was most notably inspired by Kant and various Indian religions, and was a major force within the field of philosophical pessimism.
Darkest book I've ever read; and perhaps the most convincing. This is presuming that one has been brought to term and has made it to the age of being reproductively ready, neither being a natural birthright. The question answers itself. We also know we will suffer during our lives before suffering—slowly or quickly—as we draw near to death. Ligotti is just pissed off about other people. Ligotti discusses Terror Management Theory, which argues that the primary impetus for human activity is thanatophobia, or a need to distract ourselves from the reality of death. Should the human race voluntarily put an end to its existence? There are no discussion topics on this book yet. In varying places Ligotti's motivation is an act either of revenge (for it is nature that inflicted consciousness on us) or of compassion (for another species like us might someday evolve and suffer if we do not make that impossible). I haven't yet read any Ligotti's fiction but I'm already impressed with his ability to use words and guide the reader effortlessly through this 'negative' journey. It's written in a very engaging way for a book about how everyone is better off not existing at all, you can tell he's more than an academic writer. To exist is to suffer but we can overcome this, to some degree. Whatever may be really “out there” cannot project itself as an affective experience. I hope that instead of again arguing their materialistic perspective by denouncing religion, they might actually get to the heart of the matter of what that denouncement means. And being so, we feel shortchanged if there is nothing else for us than to survive, reproduce, and die. The Red Brain: Great Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos, Better Never to Have Been: The Harm of Coming into Existence. In this genre, he has been classed with Edgar Allan Poe and H. P. Lovecraft. And its conclusions are even more remarkable: that the faculty we call consciousness, and consider as the apotheosis of evolutionary genetics, is profoundly destructive, not because we possess it but b Neither Positive Nor Equivocal: The Malignant Uselessness of Being
It's life's absurdity that cold logic should be so cruel until you factor in the mystery of Being, of our thoughts and feelings and lives and beliefs and values and hobbies mattering to US; the profundity of emotions, whatever form they take. The fortunate are the not-born though ‘they’ will never be aware of their good fortune. Peter Wessel Zapffe, a Norwegian philosopher whose work "The Last Messiah" reinterpreted Nietzschean concepts in a more purely pessimistic light, arguing that humanity was "a biological paradox, an abomination, an absurdity, an exaggeration of disastrous nature." Prime members enjoy fast & free shipping, unlimited streaming of movies and TV shows with Prime Video and many more exclusive benefits. For Ligotti finds an outlet for his anxiety in a logical thought progression evolving a theory which makes absolute sense, until you consider the alternative. Unlike his collection, Songs of a Dead Dreamer & Grimscribe, this book is not fiction. --This text refers to an alternate. Unfortunately, what he has produced is a work of confusing extremes and by his own admission paradoxes. That the second author is Morrissey may or may not be construed to take some shine off the accolade. The Conspiracy against the Human Race: A Contrivance of Horror. I was about to buy it until I read the goodreads reviews. Relating the inexhaustible void to primordial terror, and existential terror to horror fiction, Ligotti uses this ‘contrivance of horror’ to explain ideas present in the works of authors such as Peter Zappfe, Thomas Metzinger, Emil Cioran, Algernon Blackwood, HP Lovecraft, and Ligotti’s own works. Therefore, Ligotti emphasizes again in this chapter, (almost) all human activity is a means of killing time. A wasted opportunity. I actually found myself laughing out loud in patches, because Ligotti's pessamistic cynicism is expressed so deliciously.
I struggle with the very long phrases in this book, and need my dictionary close at any rate.
Written with the pungency and panache we expect from a master of English prose, The Conspiracy against the Human Race is a hypnotic guide to the darker regions of one of the most interesting minds of our time. So be it. But to discuss Ligotti's style and skill has been done to death. Perhaps most provocatively, Ligotti sees in the literature of supernatural fiction a confirmation of the cheerless vision he is propounding, dovetailing into his book the overarching theme that, having been ousted by evolution from the natural world, the human race has been effectively translated to a supernatural order of being. In terms of the overall conspiracy, the only important feature of our existence revealed to us is the permanent inscrutability of our existence in a blank, anonymous and indifferent world. In other words, his comfort to the death-fearing is that there is no "you" there to die in the first place.
